Avoid These Mistakes When Building Your Dream Home
There is nothing quite like the emotional connection to your home that you helped to design and build. But to ensure that your family’s dream home is just that, you will want to avoid these mistakes when building your dream home:
- Failing to look at the big picture – When designing your dream home consider your family’s day-to-day lifestyle and future plans. How long do you plan on staying in the home? Will you need to accommodate safety features for new or young children? Or might you need to think of your needs later in life as you reach retirement age and beyond? Think ahead, long-term, to see where you will be and what you will need from your home.
- Poor space planning – Planning the space for each room in your new home is essential. Poor planning will result in unused space or lack of adequate storage. Think carefully about the layout of your home, including those unique nooks and corners that can be used for storage space. Take time to plan for mudrooms, closets, playrooms and offices, but only plan spaces that will actually get used.
- Inadequate lighting – There isn’t anything more important to setting the overall atmosphere of your home than its lighting. Whenever possible, natural light should be the main source of light, so be sure that windows are present in each room and are as large as possible. Light fixtures and outlets should be plentiful to supplement the natural lighting when necessary.
- An out-of-place kitchen – The kitchen truly is the heart of the home, and oftentimes the first stop when you get home. Keep in mind if the kitchen is nowhere near the main point of entry, you can spend a lot of time walking through the entire house just to put away groceries. The kitchen should be placed, preferably, near a garage or back entrance, as well as near the dining and living areas.
